New Publication Assessing Risk from Perfluorocarboxylic Acids in Fluorinated HDPE Containers

ToxStrategies scientists LeeAnn Racz, Alison Gauthier, Jennifer Bare, Melissa Heintz, David Feifarek, Stephanie Kennedy, and Julie Panko assessed the risk of human and environmental exposure to perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs), a type of PFAS, in fluorinated high-density polyethylene (HDPE) containers in a newly published article. This study measured the amounts of PFCAs that may be present in the containers as well as the amounts that may migrate to products stored in the containers. The migration results read more…

ToxStrategies’ Scientists Publish Cobalt Bioavailability Comparison Study

ToxStrategies’ scientist Jennifer van de Ligt collaborated with a team of industry scientists to compare tissue cobalt concentrations and growth performance of beef cattle fed various sources of cobalt. Cobalt is an essential trace mineral required for ruminal vitamin B12 synthesis, but sources differ as to ruminal microbial utilization. Cattle were supplemented at two feeding levels with two currently used cobalt sources—cobalt carbonate and cobalt acetate—and one new source of cobalt—cobalt lactate. Growth performance and read more…

HEORStrategies’ Dr. Naomi Sacks is a co-author on a large-scale study of obesity and overweight in the United States

Dr. Naomi Sacks, HEORStrategies Vice President, is a co-author of a study just published in the journal Obesity Science and Practice. Using national survey data from 2016-2018, Dr. Sacks and co-authors examined clinical, economic, and health-related quality of life outcomes associated with overweight and obesity. They found that increasing overweight and obesity are significantly associated with increasing numbers of obesity-related comorbidities, poorer health-related quality of life, decreased mobility and productivity, and greater levels of disability. read more…

Case Study of In Silico Approach to Assessing Carcinogenicity

Two toxicologists from ToxStrategies’ Pharmaceuticals Practice are among the team with a new publication concerning the use of in silico (computer modeling) approaches in assessing cancer hazards. Drs. Doug Keller and Amy Mihalchik collaborated with a multi-disciplinary group of scientists to publish a case study of an in silico approach to assess pregabalin, which is carcinogenic to mice. The team’s work demonstrates the need for development of reliable in silico models to predict nongenotoxic compound read more…

New Publication Assessing Worker Exposure to 1,3-butadiene During Chemical Manufacturing

ToxStrategies scientists Julie Panko, Liz Mittal, and Kara Franke assessed potential worker exposures to 1,3-butadiene during chemical manufacturing and processing of the substance as a reactant. This industry–wide exposure assessment involved the systematic collection, compilation, and analysis of more than 6,700 personal air sample results from facilities across the United States. The data set provides robust quantitative air concentration data and exposure control information to support assessment of occupational exposures to 1,3-butadiene during its manufacture read more…
